Arnold Schwarzenegger’s English-Speaking Workout
14 June 2007, 12:10 PM. By Daniel Mauser
“Ennnn Innnngglllleesss porrr fayvvvoorrr!” exclaimed former Austrian and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger when asked about his beef with Spanish-language Television.
Arnold’s remarks “that Latinos have got to turn off the Spanish-language television programs in order to learn English” has pissed off members of the Spanish-language media for threatening their existence, along with your mom for endangering her telenovelas.
The Governator has been in hot water with the Latino community before for his views about civilian border patrols, immigration reform, and for “suggesting that ‘black blood’ mixed with ‘Latino blood’ equals a ‘hot’ personality.”
So what to do about Spanish-speaking Latinos not wanting to learn English in America? We think people are entitled to say what they want, in the language they want to say it. And while we can see how singing the “Star-spangled banner” in Spanish to a Cumbia beat may piss some people off, hey, some things change.
But we do endorse Spanish-speaking Latinos to at least know how to say: “toilet”, “it’s hot, give me a coke”, and “one ticket for Rocky please”.
