Just when we thought we could call it a day, the kids at Gawker publish a word we’ve never seen on their pages before: Mexican. It seems they have beef with the recent addition of Gustavo Arellano’s “¡Ask A Mexican!™” column to New York City’s Village Voice weekly paper. Managing Editor Choire Sicha explains in a long and impassioned rant. (One week and already the Mexicans are evoking the passion):
…according to the City earlier this year, there are 250,000 Mexicans in New York City. (Total undercount, no doubt, but: a blip.) No matter how awesome the column, the syndication is a huge mistake. The Voice doesn’t even have a media column any more—but how expensive would it be to start up Ask A Puerto Rican? Rosie Perez and John Leguizamo would totally co-write it for 50 bucks a week. I guess we’d even settle for Ask A Dominican. The smart syndication should be site-specific mutation, yo! Miami can start Ask A Cuban. Chicago can start up Ask A Greasy Pole. Hello? “Prepare to be entertained and pissed off,” says Voice editor Tony Ortega in the press release. Really? You think? Border-crossing comedy is a lot less funny this far from the border. Also: L.A. sucks.
Though our hearts are warmed by Gawker’s loyalty to their local flavor of spic, we have to wonder if Puerto Ricans can actually express themselves beyond horn honking. And besides, no matter where you go across this great nation, we’re sure EVERYONE has questions about Mexicans. Those elusive, table clearing creatures. Why are they so quiet? What’s with all the hair gel? And how do they find jeans to fit their tiny little legs? Perhaps these and many other questions will be answered in the coming months. But first we have to teach Gustavo to stop using the word gabacho and start using the word gringo. If he’s going to answer for the Mexicans, he should at least write like one.

Not in my experience and if you read the comments on that Gawker post, you’ll see I’m not the only one who agrees.
