Australian production company Endemol Southern Star released an apology to the Mexican government today for a segment called “Mexican Night” that aired on last Friday’s episode of Big Brother, offending Mexicans and Aussies alike. What would unite these two groups of people who basically have nothing in common? Good ol’ tasteless competition, that’s what. Part of the segment called for contestants to hurl balloons filled with slime at a Mexican flag, which (by the way) had its colors arranged in the wrong order. (We understand the confusion—things are all backwards ‘down under’ in the southern hemisphere.) They also had to play musical chairs while wearing mariachi outfits and eating chili con carne; in other words, they re-enacted our 11th birthday party. The producers offered a heartfelt mea culpa:
“Big Brother intended no offence to any person, country or institution and has apologised for any offence caused,” the company said. “Friday Night Live is themed each week and Mexican Night was designed as a tribute to Mexico and its vibrant cultural heritage.
Apology accepted, Big Brother. In return, we offer the image below as our own tribute to the vibrant cultural heritage of Australia. Pour one out for Steve Irwin, y’all!
