Ca$h Money Not Good Enough For Rising Accordionist
12 June 2007, 11:45 AM. By Carlos Posas
But a PS3 is good enough for his 6 year-old kid! That’s what the recently crowned king of Texas accordion, Juan Longoria, Jr., spent half of his $1,000 prize money on after winning the state title. (Remember when a video game habit didn’t cost as much as a coke habit?) Performing a piece that incorporated elements of Tejano, Conjunto, and Norteño music, the Brownsville native also won a recording session he plans to use in spreading some South Texan love–known to be highly contagious, and sweaty:
“The main part is not the cash money,” Longoria said. “It’s just a little bit of pride and a little bit of recognition, getting first place and bringing it back to the Valley and South Texas. Nobody can take that away from me.”
Well, shit: money’s the only reason we took up the damn thing in the first place. And for a new place to stash our pot.
