It’s the dirty little secret all upwardly mobile Hispanics try to hide. During the big job interview or at an appearance before the co-op board, we pray no one knows—or at the very least remembers—that in Peru the people eat guinea pig. We can’t defend it, so if it comes up, we pretend we have no idea what they’re talking about. But now, just when we thought it was a secret safely buried down in the Andes, we find out it’s for sale in New York City. After the jump, see a photo of “Cuy” American style: in your grocer’s freezer. They’re really going to build that wall now, people.

¡Cuy-dado! [Nueva York]

Is Cuy FDA approved? I love that part on the video where they show the stiff glazed menacing cuy.

PETA is gonna have a field day with this one.

This is cultural. Cuys were food before the white man came and made it a pet.. so get over it and eat some cuy. Its not a secret and nothing to be ashamed of. People from the Andes have been eating Cuy for centuries and some blanquito reporter decided to write an article on it and all of a sudden people think this is a scandal…

E. When is the best occasion to eat Cuy? Birthday? Wedding? Bar-mitzvah?

During the whole Elian Gonzalez saga, Dan Rather interviewed one of the protestors who lived across the street from Elian’s uncle. She seemed like a normal person (well, normal compared to the wackos outside), and she invited Rather and his camera crew into her house.
In the corner of her living room was a dead chicken, feathers and all, with a bunch of votive candles around it. They said it was for some kind of “religious” ceremony.
You just never know what people in Miami do behind closed doors.

If you honestly believe that was a secret you must be playing yourself. It is part of some Peruvian culture not ALL Peruvians eat Cuy!!!! Living in New York people know that they are going to see, smell, maybe even feel weird things because it has such a divers community! And on top of that different places have different customs for example in some places they may eat roaches, dogs, or snail, or as some may even eat as we do here in the states… eat fish eggs! Sounds nasty to me but thats just my own opinion. So learn to accept to be a better person if not then do as you please but don’t make streotypes that you for one do not actually now know about. Oh and try some Antecucho you might like it!
