Don’t get us wrong: we get peeved from time to time at the whitewashing that takes place when the gal to the right picks her roles. (Exhibit A—the makeover she underwent to go from chongalicious “Honey” to vanilla-flavored “Fantastic Four”.) But we consider it our duty (this one time) to play devil’s advocate for the way Jessica Alba may seem disconnected from her Latina background, specifically in light of the hating that’s caught fire among Latino media over her latest remarks:
I had a very American upbringing, I feel American, and I don’t speak Spanish. So, to say that I’m a Latin actress, OK, but it’s not fitting; it would be insincere.
It’s not like she resurrected Selena just to kill her all over again.
The point is, all our friends who’re Latino by ethnicity happen to harbor a wide spectrum of feelings when it comes to being Latino by social habit. Plenty of them rep their motherlands at all hours of the day, whether the circumstance calls for it or not; they’re the folks who hang a national flag on their walls, wear tube tops or ball caps emblazoned with a national flag or two, use cell phones whose covers look like national flags…you get the picture.
Then there are the people who’re less vocal and up-front about their heritage. They don’t mind not knowing Spanish (just like Alba), may frequent the driving range to work on their swing, and are known to rock a serious power stance when they karaoke to Journey. The fact that these two groups (and everything in between) live in harmony at our get-togethers speaks volumes about the absurdity of this witch hunt Latino media have mounted against Jessica Alba.
And that’s all the preaching we will do for today. Mass has ended. Go in peace.

I used to be a big fan of Jessica Alba but I just read a good story over on Highbrid Nation that really made me like her a lot less. Check it out if you get a chance. Now shes’s saying she’s not part Mexican? That’s really disappointing. She’s gonna lose a lot of fans over that.

This is what in Spanish is called “una babosa”.
Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, cleans your pool, parks your car and makes your bed, niña.

How do you say pendeja in English? She’s distancing herself from her
heritage because she assumes being Latina is not bankable, or “in” in Hollywood.
As soon as an opportunity arises where her heritage can be used to bring some
money and exposure (see Jennifer Lopez and Selena), she’ll be more
Mexican than Maria Felix and Cantinflas rolled into a tortilla.

Yeah, Zapata so didn’t fight to have big lipped untalented women like this one be ashamed of their roots. I’m ashamed she’s the same blood as me. Even if a tiny bit.

She didn’t say that she wasn’t of Mexican descent or that she thought she was white. She’s not ashamed of her heritage. She said that she doesn’t like to be called LATINA because she wasn’t born in Latin America, doesn’t speak Spanish, and isn’t connected to that culture. She’s an American.
Why should she be expected to act like an immigrant when she’s a third generation American? That’s ridiculous. The people complaining can’t fit in and resent the people who do.
I’m glad she spoke up. And if people don’t like it, who cares.

Its just like Nicole Richie saying that she is “black” when really she is a Mexican. Its really sad to see people deny their blood. But then again, Cameron Diaz is also latina yet everyone considers her as a white person.
Yes, the latino culture is getting bigger here(example: Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, etc.), yet Mexicans seems to get the shitty end of the stick(example:Paula Deanda, Frankie J., etc.). And if they are really famous, most of them aren’t “connected to that culture”. It breaks my heart a little.

It makes sense what she’s saying,( although it is kinda silly but hey just hope she doesn’t back track and all of a sudden want to play a latina in a movie) but what bugs me is that the media keeps considering her latina when she bluntly said she’s not, so they should stop, and give credit to those that really represent like Jennifer Lopez, Eva longoria and many others!!!!! my last name is Ergon, doesn’t mean I represent Germany or speak german, I speak spanish, and am proud to be latina!!!

by the way..in you were born in the americas..you are an american…learn your history people..latinos are americans too by nature…canadians are americans by nature also..ever heard of north america, south america and central america…you can be a latino and american at the same time..and by the way tino is a race for you racist haters

Ok, where shoud I start? its very stupid to deny your background, she said although shes latina shes doesnt consider herself as such because she was born in the united states, no one said that shes wasnt a united states citizen thats obvio Latin is her background, culture, ethnicity, is like being black so if you ask Oprah are you black? and shed say something like im not black because i was born in the united states, how stupid is that? of course she is black that’s obvious thats her ethnicity, background whatever you wanna call it, this is the kind of problem when people confuse, race, with nationality, u can black and be an u.s citizen, native american and be american, to be american or mexican its a nationality, to be latin is not a fucking nationality is there a country called Latinland? no idiots

I agree totally, to be latin is not a race or nationality Ive been many places and Ive seen lots of white people in Argentina, not so many but still some white people in mexico specially high class mexicans you see these white gilrs with blue or green eyes its so weird but then you realize those are just stereotypes, to be latin is a culture a language a past in common, Cameron Diaz she is WHITE and she Is LATIN just….I hope people understand this one day

I think she should just kill herself that way she’ll not give birth to more brown skin people like her, not that I mind Im not racist but she seems to be a big racist it must be horrible to feel that way and be her so she’d make sure there will not be more unhappy gilrs or boys feeling they dont fit in

cameron diaz is white..she’s a white cuban and race exists in latin american countries..gov’t there just makes people think it doesnt exists..that the people are all mexican or all cuban or all brazillian when they know full well who is black, who is white , who is indian in these countries and they are treated accordingly. black and indian latinos are treated very poorly and the mostly pure white latinos are treated fairly. Do the research!

Jessica Alba gets her “brown” skin from her indigenous indian background..mexican is a nationality..thats all. Most mexicans not all but most are of almost pure native indian racial background and the mexicans in power are either pure white(spanish) or mestizo(mixed white/indian) racial background and aethestically look more white.

1. Race, ethnicity, and nationality all different from each other.
2. Jessica Alba doesn’t say anything about being or not being Mexican. She is talking about culture: American culture vs. Latina culture. She is not putting one above the other.
3. I had the impression she was not wanting to claim the “latina” description because she felt she would be WRONG to say that. If she were to say she were Latina, then someone would know about her American upbringing, American self-identification, etc., then call her a wannabe or a fake or a hypocrite because she isn’t really Latina.
I have Native American blood, but I don’t claim to be Native American because I feel it would be lying. DOes that make me ashamed of that background? No way! I am very proud of it and honestly wish I could claim that heritage more honestly.
Jessica Alba isn’t “distancing” herself from anything. She’s trying to be authentic. She doesn’t think of herself as Latina because she wasn’t raised to think of herself that way (culture, again, people). That’s all. shrug

All I know is that, she’s the most beautiful actress in the world. So yummy, love her!

Latinas are ugly. I can’t blame her for claiming her white side. I’d be ashamed if I were latin.

she is such a faker! She should be aproud of her latina roots she is an embarrasedment to the latino community! If she is so ashamed of being consider latina then why the hell did she pose for PEOPLE IN ESPANOL and go to the ALMA AWARDS! SHE ONLY CONSIDERS HERSELF LATINA WHEN IT SUITS HER! PUTA DE MIERDA OJALA QUE PIERDAS TU CARRERA!
