Latinas Of L.A. Transform Into Poster Girls For Chlamydia, Other STD’s
27 June 2007, 11:15 AM. By Carlos Posas
The county of L.A. has announced plans to launch an in-your-grill ad campaign about getting yourself tested after getting down. It’s even going to be bilingual! (Apparently, Latinas are among the groups most affected by a recent increase in sexually transmitted diseases.) So who do the ad wizards pick to represent chlamydia? Wouldn’t you like to know:
The posters for chlamydia feature young black women and Latinas and the message: “I know that hooking up can have a downside. That over 30,000 women in L.A. get chlamydia every year. That chlamydia is curable.”
More exciting news for these models is that they might wind up in murals, sketched onto sidewalks in chalk, and on coasters alongside the same message–we have chlamydia. (Sexy!)
According to the director of L.A. county’s Department of Public Health, the purpose of these (somewhat) unconventional methods is to reach “people who are not going to be watching mainstream television or reading the newspapers.” Now you’ve done it, honkey! It’s one thing to associate Latinas with a disease that makes your piss burn, but calling them ignorant of the media is uncalled for. Then again, we’re certainly not a mainstream outlet, sooo…wanna advertise with us?
