A ridiculous plea was submitted this morning by the Hispanic Federation, one of the nations largest Latino advocacy organizations, urging the FCC–that one that controls what you get to watch or listen to–to “grant speedy approval of the merger of Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Radio.” Apparently Latinos really really need this merger to go through.

We encourage actions that will provide our community with the benefits of competition, lower prices and more choices in a fair and equitable manner,” said Lillian Rodriguez-Lopez, Hispanic Federation President.

The HF goes on to mention that satellite radio provides an important news, information, and entertainment source for Latinos unheard of in commercial radio; examples include CNN en Español, ESPN Deportes and Mexico Canta. Finally we can get our Mexico Canta! We’ve actually never heard of that station.

“For the most part, the mainstream media companies offer very limited music and entertainment programming targeted to the Hispanic community,” added Ms. Rodriguez-Lopez.

Really? We have our subscription-free radio on right now, and we’re having a hard time finding something that is not in Spanish.
