Miss USA: The Plop Heard Round The World
4 June 2007, 10:30 AM. By Cindy Casares

We were ready to put the Miss Universe catfight between bickering sisters Mexico and U.S.A. behind us this week, but The New York Times stirred the shit up all over again this weekend in a Miss Universe “think” piece that dismisses Miss U.S.A. as a powerless entity:
NOWHERE in the United States Constitution is there any mention of Miss U.S.A. She has no authority to declare war. She does not build border walls or round up undocumented immigrants. Those things are left to others, none of whom wear a sash. [editor’s note: J. Edgar Hoover?] But that fact seemed to get lost during the recent Miss Universe pageant, when Mexicans greeted Rachel Smith, Miss U.S.A., with one chorus after another of boos.
We call boo on this whole line of reasoning. Has Congress ever been in the 5th most viewed video on YouTube? And as far as Miss U.S.A. not being able to declare war, we disagree because she is clearly declaring war on ugly people. A cause we fully support because, frankly, we have enough of them in this country. And, let’s face it, if the Mexicans were half as pretty as, say, the Brazilians, we wouldn’t need to build a wall to keep them out. Which is obviously why they were booing her. They’re haters. (Something you get used to when you’re pretty. We know.)
