Politicians Say The Darndest Things: Schwarzenegger Edition
26 June 2007, 3:20 PM. By Cindy Casares

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced his idea for raising poor test scores among Latino students to a group of Latino journalists at the National Hispanic Media Conference in San Jose . The Fresno Bee explains:
It’s not by studying harder or reading more. It’s not by providing tutors or encouraging parental involvement. The solution is not hiring teachers who are better qualified or who Latino students can culturally identify with. It’s not reducing class size in overcrowded schools so they can receive more personalized attention. The governor thinks the solution is much simpler than that: “You’ve got to turn off the Spanish television set.”
No word on whether or not said poor Latino students even speak Spanish as a first language. Last time we checked the poor scholastic performance in the American Latino community had a lot more to do with a cultural attitude dictated by a level of poverty that breeds ignorance, but we probably heard that on Univision so who knows if it’s true.
