Pop Singer Chayanne Still Stuck In Early '90s

Chayanne_Eternal_Adolescent_6_20_07.jpg Puerto Rican pop idol of yesteryear Chayanne—considered by some a duplicate of his label mate, Ricky Martin, minus the same kind of “progressive” career—just doesn’t want to grow up, and it showed in his Hollywood concert last night. How does one play this hang-up to his advantage, short of becoming the next spokesman for Toys ‘R Us? Apparently, the 38 year-old performer gets his audience to buy into it as well:

”I’d like to dedicate this to all the girls who feel 15,” Chayanne said in the middle of his concert at the Seminole Hard Rock near Hollywood on Wednesday night.

The crowd of 5,000 swooning women (and swooning men) approved of going back in time and never ever leaving with their “near-constant roar,” according to the Miami Herald. God bless Chayanne for giving these bored mothers something to do; we sure as hell don’t know how to entertain them.

Then again, we can’t really fault the guy for his attitude; the height of his career came over a decade ago. Turns out his moves are from the same era, as well:

the hand to the heart, or outstretched to the audience. […] He’ll pulse his pelvis, then give a ”Oohhh, was that me?” grin. When he bumped up against a girl dancer’s back end, it almost looked accidental. The crowd still whooped.

As it should have. After all, they probably wanted to be in her place.
