Reggaetón Running Out Of Gasolina

Praise the lords of pop music! A fresh report from the Chicago Tribune’s Metromix notes how the popularity of reggaetón is waning these days, leaving the Latino hip-hop genre on life support. The article then speculates whether the two year-old music trend will go the way of boy bands, or if it’s going through an awkward growing phase–like when you developed backne right before your first gym class. Experts galore weigh in, pinpointing the bandwagon effect (i.e., that flood of bargain bin Daddy Yankees hitting airwaves every day) as the music’s main stumbling block. One radio producer even “compares the ‘Gasolina’-fueled frenzy to the ‘Latin explosion’ ignited by Ricky Martin’s 1999 hit ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca.’ ” Does that still get brought up? No wonder Ricky’s trying to distance himself from his past.
