Rural Georgians Miss Their Latinos

Peach_Pickers_6_11_07.jpg The L.A. Times ventured into the backwoods of Georgia to file a story about hundreds of Mexicans there who’re now out of work and out of town because the peaches they pick at this time of year died in a freak April cold snap. Apparently, the catty employees at the Fort Valley Food Depot long for the Latino touch at their check-out aisles (if you catch our drift):

Cashiers gossip, then sigh. They miss the Latinos who loaded their checkout belts with flour tortillas, thick golden cornhusks and tamarind sodas as sweet as iced tea.

We miss our Mexicans too; they left us to go to the Hamptons once the weather got nice.
