Starbucks Takes Hold in Southern Dallas…There Goes the Neighborhood
7 June 2007, 11:00 AM. By Carlos Posas
Residents south of Interstate 30 in Big D might soon find their cafecitos and Bustelo-flavored sensibilities losing ground to a preference for Venti chai lattes with soy milk. Yesterday’s Dallas Morning News details the recent emergence of java-pushing icon Starbucks in a part of town the paper implies is browner than others, calling it “less-than-affluent” and “less highly educated”. We call it “home.” So does Araceli Servin, who said the following “in an English/Spanish mix” about her neighborhood Starcrack:
“Before, I had to go to Duncanville. [...] This is more close. … I was a lot excited when it opened.” While polishing off a mocha drink in a tall paper cup, the woman said she suspected Starbucks might be hesitant to locate stores in areas “with Hispanic people.”
Guanabee doesn’t blame ‘em. It’s only a matter of time before long lines at the cashier turn into this.

they pull this bullshit in latino-flavored neighborhoods in chicago as well. avondale is conspicuously free of the ‘bucks, while logan square — just one neighborhood over, and recently visibly gentrified — has a great one right on the boulevard.
i’m not complaining, though. the best cafe in the neighborhood, mojoe’s on belmont, is actually hispanic-owned, and there are rumours of a caribou going in soon.
