Lurking in the wings and waiting for some gullible Hispanic businessmen to invest, it’s Glamorosas!
The “girl’s lifestyle brand”—cartoon series? clothing line? figment of the imagination? it could be anything!—is the creation of fashion designer and illustrator Carlos Marrero, who’s birthed what seems to be a quartet of hip Latina tweeners at NYC’s Licensing 2007 International Trade Show. Their purpose is to sell consumer products to real-life Latina tweeners while “keeping in touch with their roots” and “embracing all things American”. (We try to do that at Guanabee, and tend to fail.) How are they gonna pull this off? Why, by speaking Spanglish, of course! To them, it’s:
[…] a hip mix of Spanish and English that Latina girls have embraced as a language all their own. Latina girls will identify with these bilingual chicas fab as a reflection of their own interests and aspirations.
An interesting approach to selling the idea, but we could’ve saved Marrero a wheelbarrow-ful of marketing cash by asking potential investors a simple question: Remember “The Babysitters’ Club”? Glamorosas is a slightly browner version of that.
