The Great Culo Debate: Butt or Butthole?
12 June 2007, 10:00 AM. By Cindy Casares

All around the world, the word culo means one of two things. Some of us here at Guanabee grew up using it to mean butt, arse, ass or any of the various monikers for the gluteus maximus. But for others of us, the word culo refers more specifically to the butthole, anus, or backdoor. Depending on which camp you fall into, you either find it flattering or particularly disturbing when someone catcalls you on the street with such compliments as, “Me gusta tu culo!” Translation: “I like your culo!” (Mauser gets this all the time.)
In times of uncertainty, we turn to a trusted friend. Wikipedia:
Culo may refer to:
• Culo, slang for buttocks, the Latino and Italian equivalent of booty
• Culo, a song by rapper Pitbull from the album M.I.A.M.I.

But at WordReference.com, we found evidence on their Spanish language forum that some folks have heard it used to mean the chocolate starfish.
Yeah, in Mexico, culo is interpreted as the “sphincter.” In El Salvador, it’s just like in Spain–culo is the can.And that in Latin America it’s considered a “strong” word that is somewhat rude compared to in Spain where it’s as harmless as the American butt, or the English, bum.
Perhaps there is no wrong way to use the word judging by how frequently people throw it around. And it seems opinions on this subject are as varied as the assholes who give them. Which is just one more reason we love America.
