Corruption in the Mexican police force is just like Diddy’s favorite tag line: can’t stop, won’t stop, it’s bad boys for life! Which is why we were hardly encouraged when the higher-ups in Mexico booted a total 284 top federal officers yesterday, sending them down to ‘summer school’ for re-training. (Courses include Bribery 101, Coercion Workshop, and a Drug Planting Seminar.) The whole idea is to remove the number one thing stopping Mexican cops from solving the drug trafficking problem…Mexican cops. Lip service and hot air followed closely on the heels of the crackdown’s announcement:
“We know Mexicans demand an honest, clean and trustworthy police force,” the public security secretary, Genaro García Luna, said at a news conference. “It’s obvious there are mafias that are acting to keep the situation from changing, to continue enriching themselves through corruption and crime.”
In other words, these crooked cops are leading their lives the Mexican way. Who are we to judge? Next thing you know, they’ll be going after cleaning ladies that steal shit from hotel rooms littered with drunken springbreakers.
