Daily News Blows The Lid Off Low Latin Standards
2 July 2007, 9:45 AM. By Cindy Casares
New York Daily News Latino writer Dolores Prida has come up with our new favorite acronym. Granted, she came up with it in April, but we weren’t around then, so sue us. PMGS, the Pero Es Mi Gente Syndrome is something we have long loathed, but failed to articulate properly. In fact, you could say this entire website was created to help eradicate it. Thankfully Prida has put it into words:
Why have most of the major Latino organizations remained silent about Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ woes? They’re suffering from PMGS (Pero es Mi Gente Syndrome)…(But he’s one of us). The Latino equivalent of “I am my brother’s keeper.”
Indeed, what passes for Latin pride is too often blind cheerleading of people or entities who frankly blow. We’ll be elaborating more about this later in our upcoming Ten Most Embarrassing Latinos feature. Until then, take a look at the Daily News article here.

I think there is definitely something to be said about PMGS as much as there are latinos who refuse to stand bullshittery from other latinos. The flip side of the coin, of course, being that a lot of gringos hate Alberto Gonzales precisely because he’s latino. Which begs the question, “Is mediocre representation better than no representation at all?” Discuss…
PS Can’t wait for the Ten Most Embarrassing Latinos features. Surely you can come up with more than ten.
love Dolores!!!!!!!!!
Don’t forget to include the Watergate burglars. They were Cuban.
