Exóticos: Not Your Grandpa’s Gay Luchadors
13 July 2007, 4:01 PM. By Carlos Posas
Remember that rabbit hole we mentioned earlier today? The very gay, Mexican wrestling one that yesterday’s Máximo post sent us down? Well, it gets deeper. Turns out the word ‘exótico’ does in fact denote a whole category of gay wrestlers. (And we thought it was code for luchadors that moonlight as strippers.) Two of their most seasoned members, each with 20 years of experience under his belt, belong to the hugely popular Mexican wrestling league Triple A; they’re featured in an interview we stumbled upon, then translated (poorly) and abridged for your reading pleasure. Take it away, Stardust and Mayflowers!
Intros
My Flowers: Over the course of 18 years, I’ve always defined myself as a homosexual. We homosexuales like to do things well; if not, we don’t do them.
Stardust: It doesn’t matter if we win or lose, as long as we’re respected. We don’t ask to be accepted. I don’t have a cause [to fight].
Q: Is there a gay audience?
MF: We can’t say if a homosexual is going to see us, because perhaps he’s going to see Latin Lover. [That's him at left. He's actually one of the straight ones.] The people have a taste for all types of lucha. We’re spicier.SD: We’re different in our ringside manner. We grope our opponents, kiss them, caress them. The majority of my rivals get mad, but we know how to defend ourselves.
Q: What do you think about gay marriage legislation?
SD: That doesn’t interest me. The way one oughtta live is to live with or without papers, with or without the right [to do so]. I haven’t suffered discrimination. Those who complain about this are assholes, because each one of them should live his life as he wishes. My world is my world.
Q: How do the fans treat you?
MF: They ask me for advice, as many men as women.
SD: Me, they ask for a night in the sack.
Q: What would you have dedicated yourself to if not lucha libre?
SD: Me, to prostitution.
Q: What’s the only thing you fear?
MF: Getting old.
SD: Death.
Outro
SD: I’m not proud to be gay, but neither am I ashamed. I accept it.
