Food You Can Use: The Memelita
10 July 2007, 2:15 PM. By Cindy Casares

One thing we love about the gringos at Gothamist–they love their Mexican food. They are on a never ending quest for the best in New York City which, let us tell you, is a virtual desert when it comes to Mexican cooking. This week they feature a treat we are unfamiliar with: the memelita. They describe them as “tortillas on steroids”, but from the picture, they look more like a cross between a gordita, a sope and huarache to us.
memelitas are oblong boats of masa that have been deep-fried to a beautiful golden color. When they’re fried they puff up, so that the whole thing consists of two layers of crispy fried masa surrounding a moist interior. All in all they make a perfect base for meat, particularly if you’re lucky enough to find slow-cooked goat on the menu.
Of course there are the usual, if I ate one of those, I’d have to spend four hours on the treadmill and real Mexican food isn’t fried b.s. on the comments board, but in our experience, the raza loves the masa and God love ‘em, so do we.
