From Newsweek Cover Boy for “Latino Power” to Lying Sleaze Bag: the Evolution of Mayor Villaraigosa

For today’s coverage of the ongoing sex scandal between disgraced Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Telemundo anchorwoman/Capitol Hill succubus Mirthala Salinas, the L.A. Times did some man-on-the-street reporting to validate the notion that the people who once voted Toñito in are now ashamed of themselves. (Not since Henry Cisneros have local Latinos felt so guilty over catapulting a fellow Chicano into political stardom.) But because man-on-the-street reporting is so passé and demanding, we point you instead to the paper’s online message board to get a feel for local opinion; after all, the damn thing has 112 pages worth of comments. Commenting on two separate occasions, a reader named P. Taylor put it thusly:
HE IS A LYING CHEATER, HYPOCRITICAL SLEAZE BAG! Don’t even think of forgiving him….throw him out of office. He can never ever again be trusted. He makes my skin crawl!
(Our skin crawls at the thought of what P. Taylor does with all that time on his hands.)
NOT IN ROMEO’S DISTRICT had this to say:

Don’t get what lets all hate means.
Give me a break. I actually live and vote in Los Angeles, and believe me, he will be just fine. It’s not as though he took money or robbed an election. He cheated on his wife and that’s HER problem, not mine.
SF mayor Gavin Newsom, slept with his best friend’s wife, who also happened to be a paid member of his staff. Nothing happened to him.
NY mayor Rudy Giuliani had an affair with Judith Nathan, and now he’s the front runner in the Republican primary.
And what’s with this stupid notion from the media, especially the LA Times, that Latinos are suposed to be “ashamed” of what he did? Why should I be ashamed of something that has nothing to do with me?
I didn’t see the media telling Italian-Americans to be “ashamed” of Giuliani’s indiscretions. They didn’t tell white people to be ashamed of Newsom’s affair, and I didn’t see the media telling gays or the Irish to be ashamed of McGreevy.
Shame is a waste of time. It’s how people are kept “in their place.” We can thank the Catholic Church for that kind of brainwashing.
