Summering On The Couch: We Hate Everybody On "Without Prejudice?"

withoup.7.16.07.jpg TV rots your brain. Let’s do it.

We just caught a promo for a new game show that premieres tomorrow on GSN (formerly the Game Show Network) called “Without Prejudice?” During the game, a panel of “ordinary members of the public” reduces a group of five contestants down to one deserving winner of $25,000 based first on their looks and later on other out-of-context information. Translation: A bunch of idiot Americans (“I like Michael. He’s a young guy. I can relate. You know, we have a lot of relations.”) judge a bunch of other idiot Americans (“There’s probably two or three hundred kids around the world that want to claim that they’re mine, but you know how it is. Heh. Heh.”) to award one with an amount of money that, after taxes, will probably fund a trip to Vegas.

While the site purports the show to be an important dialogue starter for the issue of prejudice in America, (National Council Of La Raza is one of the partners listed on their site), it’s pretty clear the draw is exploitative. Right off the bat in the first episode, which is available on their site in its entirety, there’s an “I don’t like him because he’s Black,” comment from a Polynesian- Texan (pictured above) sitting on the panel. And, yes, there is a predictably irate Black dude sitting on the panel next to him. While the exchange does little to change our views on people of color one way or the other, it will no doubt further cement the already shit name that Texas has in the minds of liberal Americans. It also confirmed the creepy, reality-show vibe we’ve come to expect from American television today. In keeping with the show’s theme, we’ll make a snap judgment and say it would be one of America’s favorite guilty pleasures if it wasn’t on an obscure cable network most people have never heard of.
