Gael García Bernal To Star In “Pedro Páramo.” Project’s Legitimacy Plummets Among Lit Dorks, Skyrockets Among Groupies.

We haven’t read the short novel in years, but magical realism prototype “Pedro Páramo” might be worth a second peek now that its latest screen adaptation has been greenlit for production. Mexican author Juan Rulfo based the story on a young man who promises his mother on her deathbed that he’ll seek out his estranged father, the title character, in a spooky desert town. (”Joe Dirt,” it is not.) Natch, this protagonist will be played by the Hollywood herald of all things authentically Mexican, Gael García Bernal. We can’t really weigh in on whether Bernal is fit for the job, because–between bong rips, video games, and stilted class presentations–all we gathered from “Páramo” is that ghosts scare the shit out of horses. Our official opinion? Gael should put some pants on, dammit. Slowly.
