Don’t know if you’ve heard, but ABC has made room in its fall line-up for an entire sitcom based on those smarmy cavemen that push Geico car insurance while dealing with existential crises. (Wait, it gets better.) Network brass has tried to convince the Television Critics Association that “Cavemen” tactfully draws a parallel between the stereotypes neanderthals face in a modern world to those that minorities face in an increasingly multi-ethnic one. Looks like the producers need to try a bit harder:
The show is supposed to explore race relations by the trials and tribulations of the cavemen characters, but some critics say all the “Cavemen” stereotypes—athleticism, sexually prowess [sic], laziness, etc.—remind them of one race’s stereotypes in particular. Critics ask the panel if “Cavemen” is actually a show about African Americans. To which we reply, they could just as easily be Latino. We, too, are easily offended, athletic, sexually-charged, lazy bums. Don’t believe us? Just turn on
Univisión. (Too ironic? If Fox drops by to censor us, we’re out at the bodega.)
