Latino College Kids Interning In D.C. Just As Full Of It As You Remember
27 July 2007, 1:45 PM. By Carlos Posas
Remember that kid in college who was waaay too into politics, president of every Latino organization on campus, and had a penchant the sweater vest / tie ensemble? (We don’t apologize if the guy we just stereotyped was you.) Well, he and all the other MAPs he’s interning with in D.C. just got a wordy five-page feature in the Washington Post. We could only stomach so many stories about finding oneself in the Latino cultural spectrum–and so much reiteration that this spectrum is indeed wide– before passing out in our hummus. To spare you from doing the same, this highlight from page one lets you know exactly what you’re getting into…the good stuff’s after the jump:
[Washington] has made them think deeply about who they are, and where they fit into this turbulent feat of political imagination and plain winging-it called America.
Such existential ruminations spark other considerations: Whom do you date? How good (or bad) is your Spanish? How comfortable are you with your skin tone? (Too dark? Too light?) Are you American enough? Is the reputation of la Raza riding on your every move — or is that perpetual feeling of being watched just an illusion?
Damn intro reads like a hazing ritual at Latino frat Phi Iota Alpha. Not like we would know, or anything.

“The summer sky is deepening, darkening. Identity also comes in colors, but colors are deceptive.”
Where did this dude learn to write? This sounds like a bad Disney song. Pocahontas?
Why the hate? jealous?
It beats having yet another story about how “illegals” (wink wink… read Latinos) drain the system.
By the way, just because the writing is corny doesn’t mean that the students and the substance are.
I agree with E. Why the hate? I think it’s awesome that they are doing that. I’m not saying get all political and activist, but so many Latinos have such a negative self-image, it’s great to see these kids doin something on capitol hill.
Leave that old-country mindset of jealousy. We should be proud of these kids. I support them all the way! I agree with E, the wording of the article may be corny, but the substane is real.
David Montgomery’s mom–is that you?

One question why Phi Iota Alpha?
Four Phi Iota Alpha brothers have been elected presidents of their respective nations of origin and countless more are involved in politics.
Just my two cents…
