First_Tortilla_Anaya_7_18_07.jpg Finally, a role model for young Mexican girls that doesn't ask them to sell out so damn hard... but make tortillas instead? We came across a literary review of children's book "The First Tortilla: A Bilingual Story" by the guy who wrote Bless Me, Ultima (the novel that taught us Mexicans / vomiting can be literary motifs) and couldn't help but comment. Drawing heavily on Aztec folklore, the book stars an indigenous girl named Jade who saves her village from drought by communing with the Mountain Spirit and discovering corn. The lesson? There is no such thing as a contemporary Latino character the kids can look up to. And shrooms are essential to Aztec culture, as well as children's literature.
