Mock Telenovela Debuted By Nielsen Company, Considered Too Hokey
31 July 2007, 1:30 PM. By Carlos Posas
Whether attendees liked it or not, this past weekend’s Puerto Rican Festival in Chicago neighborhood Humboldt Park played host to a publicity stunt by TV ratings-monger the Nielsen Company. “To inform consumers about what Nielsen does and how sample households are randomly selected,” the company’s marketing people convinced them to stage an outdoor ‘telenovela’ where local actors melodramatically interpreted the role of a Hispanic household chosen at random to receive a visit from a Nielsen agent. (What’s the real reason for the agent’s visit? Will the daughter ever find out the true story behind her unsavory origins? Is the child growing in her womb a clone of the Nielsen guy, or her own father’s seed? For that matter, does she even know she’s pregnant? Stay tuned to find out, when this mockunovela takes the stage once again at September’s Fiestas Patrias.) It’s exciting news for us on two levels:
Since the post you are reading is exactly the third one we’ve written describing a Chicago locale in relation to the Latino world, we can say the town’s exposure here has gone from non-existent to negligible. (That Pilsen post still hasn’t produced any local blog references.) Secondly, it proves that the way to a Latino consumer’s heart is through his or her guiltiest viewing pleasures. Hell, we woulda tried out for a part if we’d had the chance.

Hmm. So, Nielsen fucks up with their latino polling methodology and they set up a telenovela to appease us and to show us how they do business? Huh?
So, if you follow that logic, had Nielsen angered the gay population would they be setting up a mock bathhouse? Stereotypes are fascinating. I hate to think what mock-ups they would be setting up for offended jews and blacks.
An outdoor event in Humboldt Park that wasn’t the Puerto Rican parade or a drug bust? I’m SHOCKED, I tell you.
If anyone can find a clip of the novela on You Tube, I’d greatly appreciate it, I probably went to grade school with half the cast.
