Besides, Isn’t It Easier To Count Undocumented Immigrants When They’re In Handcuffs?

Given that the estimated number of undocumented immigrants in this country varies from 7 million to 12 million to 20 million depending on who you talk to, the Census Bureau probably takes pride in its constitutional mandate to count them accurately. So we couldn’t help but picture feuding siblings who aren’t on speaking terms when we read that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement will refuse any request by the Census people to halt enforcement raids during the 2010 census–a request they barely announced they would make last week. Their job is to make sure everyone gets counted, documented or not, so the reason for their request is simple: Juan and the thirty other illegals staying with him are less likely to open the door to a harmless census taker when they fear he wields guns and deportation papers instead of a clipboard. Maybe a request the head honchos at ICE will consider is incorporating census takers into their squads as bait for the more gullible immigrants they’re after.
