Conservative Hispanic Cartoon Canned From Texas Paper, Thereby Letting The World Know That One Existed

San Antonio Express-News readers are up in arms about the paper’s recent decision to fire its conservative, Hispanic cartoonist with a 20-year tenure while keeping its liberal one. The character who gets the can along with him? Nacho Guarache, a mustachioed Mexican everyman in flannel who uses homespun gumption to solve local problems and react to current events. After a cursory glance, we didn’t really see anything right-wing enough about him to validate speculation that he got cut cuz of politics–nor did we see anything funny enough about him to merit readers’ mourning. (Serves us right for thinking a daily strip could be entertaining.) The above panel is the only remotely amusing thing to come out of a dip in his backlog. Then again, Leo Garza–Nacho’s creator–does have a halfway decent bit on the G.O.P. Hispanic Outreach. It’s after the jump, along with a link to his archives so you can judge for yourself.

i grew up in san antonio and, unfortunately, was subjected to leo garza’s so-called cartoons. you are correct on one point, they were not funny at all. and as far as right wing? very much so. as well as homophobic, anti arts funding, pro george bush, and did i mention not funny?
not funny, conservative, pro-bush - he sounds like someone i wouldn’t care for very much. but he’s been working there for 20 years! what reason could the paper truly provide for firing him and keeping the liberal guy? that he wasnt funny? (yet they kept him for 20 yrs… is the liberal guy exceptionally funny?) as happy as i am that this means less conservative BS will pollute ppl’s brains, this was clearly political. ah well.
