Covering The Coverage: A “Feminist Warrior” Reviews Once Upon A Quince

New York Daily News reporter and self-professed veteran of “old feminist and minority-empowering wars”, Dolores Prida has picked up on one of our favorite trends—the Super Sweet Quinceañera—from a book called Once Upon A Quinceañera-Coming Of Age In The USA. With the book’s reports of families taking out second mortgages to spend as much as $80,000 on a party for their princess, Prida is in the midst of an emotional crisis:

Perhaps it was unavoidable that in a conspicuous consumption society, immigrant Latino parents live their American Dreams through their children, and give them a quince fiesta their own parents couldn’t afford to give them. I find this all quite disappointing. And painful.

We find blaming MTV helps.
