With the book’s reports of families taking out second mortgages to spend as much as $80,000 on a party for their princess, Prida is in the midst of an emotional crisis:
Perhaps it was unavoidable that in a conspicuous consumption society, immigrant Latino parents live their American Dreams through their children, and give them a quince fiesta their own parents couldn’t afford to give them. I find this all quite disappointing. And painful.
