Covering the Coverage: New York Daily News Overexaggerates the Presence Of Latinas In Hollywood, Calls Andy García Old

We should’ve known what we’d be getting into by reading an article outta the Latino section of the New York Daily News, but its headline of “Guapos wanted” appealed to our egos. (Or made us retch. We can’t remember which.) Writer Nuria Net profiles the atypical path of “Latino heartthrob” Xavier Torres from Puerto Rican clothing model to recurring character on “Entourage” (read: dumped after two episodes) while refusing offers to star in telenovelas. Net then tries to rationalize the need for an article like this, other than to get paid:
Hollywood is flowing with smart, beautiful Latina leading ladies — Salma Hayek, Penélope Cruz, América Ferrera — but where are the new Latin men to heat the screen? Gael García Bernal and Benicio Del Toro might be high profile but they are hardly heartthrobs, and no, over-the-hill Andy García does not count.
Let’s see…where do we begin sniffing out the bullshit in these statements?
How about the fact that, in terms of numbers, that ‘flow’ of Latina talent she talks about is more like a trickle. (Our top researchers told us so.) It’s also clear that Nuria hasn’t been around a bunch of struggling New York actresses when they talk about how they’d ‘dominate’ Gael; trust us–their hearts aren’t the only things throbbing.
