Covering The Coverage: The New York Times Tries To Ride Perez Hilton's Slimy Coattails (Again)

Perez_NYTimes_Tree8_1_07.png Over the weekend, that bastion of journalistic integrity known as the New York Times and über-exposed gossip blogger Perez Hilton were just sitting in a tree. (We’ll let the darkest part of your imagination run wild with the second half of that rhyme.) First, the Times used the word “dignified” to describe the self-proclaimed Queen of All Media’s mainstream exposure as of late. Now, a feature on the their multimedia feed called “Blog This!” tries to keep Hilton’s infamy newsworthy with the following subtitle:

A blogger has parlayed resentment into celebrity.

Do they want to look like your uncle who tries so hard to show the kids he’s ‘with it’?

Whether unwittingly or on purpose, the slideshow features old-ish photo ops that pair Hilton with the dregs of entertainment society: his doppleganger Paris, Tori Spelling, pop ‘singer’ Fergie, … Gloria Estefan. Wait a minute, how’d you get in there?

You mean to tell me that this bitch was skinny at some point? The girl really let herself go, she was always fugly though.

I don’t know if that’s mockery, but please, keep your allusions to Ms Estefan tasteful. Otherwise, you will have to fear her wrath. For the rhythm… the rhythm is like Stasi. It’s gonna get ye.

The vibe I get from most NY Times online pieces is less unhip uncle and more ivy league snot who tries to justify his pop culture infatuation by intellectualizing them.

But that’s just me.
