Dress Code At Dominican Nightclubs: White Tees Okay, White Skin A Must

Prompted by last week’s news that the Dominican Republic is censuring a nightclub in its capital for discriminating against Black patrons and employees, a New York Post writer shares his own personal experience of being rejected at the door of a “hot spot” in the DR. We don’t see the big deal, as bouncers always have a million reasons to turn you away. If it’s not the clothes you’re wearing, it’s the crew you’re rolling with, or the girl / guy on your arm… so the tone of your skin is just as valid–wait, what?!
It took a minute for this to sink in for Julio Tavárez, as well:

Then, it dawned on me. It wasn’t our clothes or our car. The only difference between the people that were given passage and us was they were light-skinned with European features while we were dark-skinned with African features. We were the wrong color.

Considering a Black person the wrong color in a country “where more than 80 percent of the population is mixed with an African descendant” sounds silly, don’t it?

Familiar, too, cuz we’ve covered this issue before–only in relation to Dominican women straightening their hair to avoid being associated with poor, ugly Black folk. These two quaint stories, along with many more we haven’t dug up yet, lead us to the following conclusion about prejudice against Blacks in the Dominican Republic: reflexive racism is sooo pomo.
