Fidel Castro ain’t dead yet, readers, so this graphic has caught an unexpected second wind. When we said that he danced the babalu yesterday all over reports of his passing, what we really meant was that he was penning an editorial called “Submission to Imperial Politics” for release today. It all but places his bet on a Hillary Clinton-Barack Obama ticket to win the whole presidential enchilada in ‘08, then calls them out for pandering to the Cuban exile community in Florida that’s worth its weight in electoral college gold:
The word today is about the seemingly invincible ticket that could be Hillary for president and Obama as her running mate. Both of them feel the sacred duty to demand “a democratic government in Cuba.” They are not making policy: they are playing a game of cards on a Sunday afternoon.
We’re not quite sure where he’s going with that metaphor, but figure it’s based in some sort of sound judgment—the man has outlasted nine U.S. presidents. Then again, he could just be overdue for another dose of his anti-death meds. We’ve included a link to a (poorly) translated transcript of the editorial itself, so check it out if you wanna read about Castro’s man-crush on President Jimmy Carter, golfing with Che, and the admiration he felt for that other Clinton when the ol’ redneck willed Elián back onto Cuban soil.

The release of Elian from his (great-)uncle’s “custody” still ranks as my favourite Janet Reno memory, ahead even of her appearance on the final installment of “Janet Reno’s Dance Party”.
