Gay Prom In Frisco Features Fun With Fashion And A Fight

Frisco_Gay_Prom_8_2_07.jpg We envy 15 year-old YO! Youth Outlook correspondent Gabriella Fazio not only because she grasps the concept of narrative journalism, but also ‘cause she went to the annual San Francisco LGBT Center’s Gay Prom and got to write about it. The story is a charming and comic glimpse into Fazio’s night out with her friends Peaches, Lexi, Keisha, and Kayla. (Odds are that at least one of them is Latina.) Though her girlfriend wasn’t on-hand, the young reporter had a blast and proved a theory we’ve always had about gay guys dressing more tastefully than lesbians:

Studs were in suits or tuxes, and femmes were in fancy dresses or gowns. However, I found it interesting how none of the gay guys were in tuxes or even suits. If they were at all dressed up, they simply wore nice slacks and an open collar shirt.

Alas, as with snap judgments, hormones are de riguer at proms—especially since they boil over when you least expect it:

Towards the end of the night, we noticed a big group of people gathering over near the door. […] I looked into the crowd and saw these two friends who I had seen together most of the night. The one stud was pulling the other up off the floor, and as she rose, I knew exactly what had happened. She had a knot the size of a ping-pong ball on the right side of her forehead, and her nose and lip were busted. I overheard someone saying some Samoan femme did it, but everyone was in awe of what had happened.

Out of such hostility springs a great t-shirt idea… “Some Samoan Femme Did It.” (We need to get the NaCo guys on that, stat!)
