Rodrigo Y Gabriela Become MTV’s “Artist Of the Week,” Immediately Lose Credibility Among Diehard Fans

When we first commented on this plucky (get it?), acoustic guitar-thrashing duo from Mexico City who found fame on the streets of Dublin, we were still trying to figure out what about them got the kids to listen so religiously. A solid two months later, MTV has come down from on high to grant them the title “Artist of the Week.” We gotta hand it to the interns over there–they sure can write some mean, contradictory copy:

They don’t play flamenco, yet they’re not gypsy. They don’t have lyrics, yet they don’t improvise. Their rhythmic music is fast and furious, outrageously energetic, epic and explosive and breaks through any and all language barriers.

And now that a corporate succubus like MTV has raved about this rhythm, Rodrigo Y Gabriela will no longer be cool to their hardcore, hipster fans. So who’ll step up to fill the void? Our mom, who saw them perform on Letterman and considers them “sweethearts.” (True story.)
