Cabana_Al_DeathRow_8_14_07.png And his nickname isn’t Dubya. In fact, the Department of Justice is the one arranging to hand the attorney general direct influence of death penalty cases in several states including California:

Under the rules now being prepared, if a state requested it and Gonzales agreed, prosecutors could use “fast track” procedures that could shave years off the time that a death row inmate has to appeal to the federal courts after conviction in a state court.

Now, regardless of where you stand on capital punishment, or whether we understand the intricacies of our country’s execution system, the fact of the matter is that the power to shorten certain people’s lives could be in the hands of a man we wouldn’t trust with our neighbor’s kids. (Even the annoying ones that play Guitar Hero at all hours of the night.) Way to go, Cabana Al!
