In lieu of rumors that the Bush administration has set plans in motion to bisect the U.S. with a super highway linking Mexico to Canada, Stephen Colbert interviews Harper’s publisher and anti-NAFTA book author, John R. MacArthur, for the above clip. What ensues is typically absurd speculation about the impact this Interstate 69 would have on society as we know it. (Other than making us snicker every time a road map is cracked open.) What MacArthur calls cheap labor and the economic colonization of Mexico, Colbert calls free trade. We say, “tomato, tomahto”—just call the whole thing off and enjoy the video.

right, because we all know only american workers deserve a fair wage. has it occured to anyone that workers in foreign countries VOLUNTEER for work at $1 an hour because it pays better than anything else in their country does?
but i digress, it’s obviously better for us to subsidize our workers by affording them protectionist trade policies. who cares if there are starving workers in foreign countries that are willing to do the same work for much less because they’re not from here.
