Destination_Quince_8_1_07.JPG As if My Super Sweet 16 hadn’t already exposed its extravagant underbelly, our favorite rite of passage for young Latina girls has hit a new high. (Or is it a low?) The rich parents of quinceañeras are increasingly being wooed by travel agencies to bankroll a ‘destination quince,’ where the celebrant has members of her family and posse join her on an exotic trip or cruise somewhere to show the world what’s it’s like to be a 15 year-old Hispanic-American with a silver spoon stuck up her ass. (Mind you, exotic in this case can mean the Epcot Center.) With travel packages ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 per person, some say the “burgeoning market” for these things is a reflection of “the growing economic clout of U.S. Hispanics.” (Read: New money.) Others say it’s a reflection of refinement:

”This is not a spring-breaker crowd,” said Sofia Cejas, regional director for international sales and marketing for Royal Caribbean. “They are very ladylike.”

Clearly she hasn’t seen the young ladies featured in this quince clip of an erotic surprise dance we dug up on YouTube. Enjoy, and be sure to include it in one of your packages.

Oh my freaking Lord. I thought the personalized matchbooks, candles, champagne glasses and 2L bottles of whiskey on every table were enough.

    Apparently, I was wrong.

I just hope that Srta. Thompson, my eighth grade Spanish I profesora at Frank Lloyd Wright Middle, is still teaching & mistakenly runs the ‘06 Quinceanera instead of the one that she was showing the class in ‘94. Granted, I enjoyed it immensely, but holy hell, that school-board will have more complaints to work thru than when Principal Bieri went after El Gran Profesor.

That girl in the middle looks like the older sister in “Sixteen Candles” when she took too much muscle relaxer for her period on the day of her wedding.

“Destination quinces” have been all the rage for years. It’s called families taking their daughters back to Mexico to celebrate their girl’s quince años with the familia. I’m going to one next week! The girl lives in LA, but the party is in Guanajuato.
