The Media Frenzy Just Got More Frenzied: Mayor Villaraigosa Slams Another Reporter (This Time, Indirectly)
3 August 2007, 4:34 PM. By Carlos Posas
Now that Telemundo has handed down a decision regarding his mistress Mirthala Salinas, L.A. mayor Antonio Villaraigosa hoped to “move forward” from the scandal by calling a midday press conference today to announce some fluff news. Unfortunately for him, scandal had other things in mind:
But a Villaraigosa news conference at the Port of Los Angeles ended chaotically, with a port police sergeant shoving a television reporter against a cargo container as she attempted to pursue the mayor.
It all started when Villaraigosa’s departure from the podium somehow triggered a shock troop instinct buried deep within several port police officers, who then formed “a skirmish line” to shield the mayor from reporters. This, of course, egged the press on even more to chase after the mayor as soon as officers backed down. Eager to get at him first, Spanish-language TV reporter Alicia Unger was then slammed by a cop who intervened. Depending on whether she’s pretty, this could all just be an elaborate courting ritual set up by Antoñito. (He’s such a romantic!)
