Something about the sneaker on the left–created by a slickly marketed, enviro-conscious company in California–made us say, “OMG! We totally need a pair.” It dawned on us when we read the fine print about the way the shoe’s sidewall, toecap, and heelcap are made:

We collect used car tires that would normally be sent to a landfill, cut them up, and use them as outsoles on some of our shoes!

It clearly speaks to our pueblo sensibilities. Meaning, how is this any different from what our grandfather’s laborers from the banana plantation would do to fashion those ugly things on the right? Guess what passes as “eco-friendly” in some countries is a function of “desperate poverty” in others.
