Worst Fake Spanish Accents--The List

inigo.8.23.07.jpg

A recent post on DeputyDog about the worst movie accents of all time is conspicuously lacking in any mention of bad Spanish accents, but the comments board got us started on a pretty good list of our own. We have to agree with several commenters who had Al Pacino as number one on their shit list:

um, you left out Pacino in “Scarface” - absolutely should be the number one worst accent ever, in film or otherwise.
What about “Scarface?” I love that movie, but on first watching it - his accent was so bad - it’s laughable.
A point DeputyDog later conceded in an update:
al pacino in scarface - fair point, it was horrendous and should’ve been included.

We once dated a boy in college in who tried to woo us with the most terrible Spanish accent that we later discovered was culled from Pacino’s, “Say hello to my little friend.” Today we get our revenge. Moving on, we’re not sure if this next one is bad, but it’s definitely funny (which probably means it’s bad):

What about Mandy Patinkin in Princess Bride. He’s attempting to do a Spanish accent, but his Yiddish/Jewish accent is more prevalent.

Speaking of funny, (except in this case it wasn’t):

Jack Black in Nacho Libre (Yes I know it was farce and it was part of the joke, but it was REAL bad)

Some other highlights on the boards include:

How about Highlander??? Christopher Lambert as a Scot(!) and Connery,(once again), as ‘Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez chief metalologist to the King of Spain…’

And “Scarface” gets it from all sides from this guy:

Tony Montanas [sic] sister Gina (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio ). Worst CUBAN accent EVER!!!! She sounds closer so some eastern European country [and] Robert Loggia as Frank Lopez. What accent was that supposed to be? Damn awful.

Cuban accents continue to elude directors twenty years later when Julian Schanbel gets his comeuppance from this commenter for casting Sean Penn as one :

Sean Penn as a Cuban farmer in “Before Night Falls”. Julian Schnabel certainly was playing around with casting […] but Penn’s performance was strangely bad mimickry below his abilities.

Luckily looks count for something when your accent sucks:

Rosario Dawson ’s “Brazilian” in “The Rundown.” (Although she looks pretty fantastic in it.)

And going way back in the files:

What about Charlton Heston’s “Mexican” accent in Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil? That’s the major flaw in an otherwise pretty great movie.

That one is a favorite around here. This list is a pretty good start, but we’re sure our readers can come up with a few more. Ideas?

You guys are forgetting that some of our Latino actors have tried, and failed, to replicate regional accents themselves. Benny Del Toro’s attempt at a Mexican accent in “Traffic” comes to mind - he sounded like a Colombian from Medellín (aka, paisa). Maybe it was an inside joke – the film was about Colombian drug dealers…

Even Gonzalo Cardona in “La Mujer de Mi Hermano”, we all think we can do a Mexican accent… but can also sound like idiots in the process…

Speaking of paisas, Unax Ugalde in “Rosario Tijera’s” made that film unwatchable… pobrecito

Or Gaelcito Garcia’s fake provincial argentinian accent in “The Motorcycle Diaries” - che, qué boludo!

The list goes oonn and oooon…
Or what about

THANK you for putting Nacho Libre on that list. I could not take it!

Willem Dafoe in Once Upon a Time in Mexico…why? Just…why????

Thank you Alexo! De Toro TOTALLY had a COLOMBIAN accent!!! He’ so hot though I forgive him.
