Blogger, writer, and Guanabee crush Johnny Diaz wrote a story in today’s Boston Globe about Cuban-American reactions to CBS’s drama Cane. When brainstorming about the show, Cynthia Cidre, Cane’s executive producer and creator said:

”[I wondered,] ‘What is the sexiest thing I know about Cubans?,’and rum came to mind…”

Interesting. When we think of sexy Cubans our minds inextricably drift to images of billowy guayabera dresses. But we digress. Diaz went out to interview real Cuban-Americans (not wannabees, like Jimmy Smits) to get their reaction about the series portrayal of Cubans. President of the National Hispanic Media Coalition Alex Nogales saw the show’s pilot and found that:

[T]he show carried a strong Cuban flavor, from the actors’ intonations to the tropical elegance of the cast’s wardrobes. ”They look like the Cubano types that I see,” he said. ”You couldn’t imagine them being Mexican-American because of the way they dressed, the way they spoke. It looked very authentic.”

Exactly. Cubans are always looking their Sunday best as exemplified by track-suit wearing Fidel Casto. And, Mexicans are too busy running across the border to care how they look. But wait, there’s more! Alana Greer, recent Boston College graduate and ex-president of the Cuban-American students association hopes Cane will dispel stereotypes, particularly about Cubans being:

Rich, right-wing white people, that our political beliefs are one way or that we are automatically of high society in Cuba.

Sorry to lay it down to you Alana, but if there is one man who is going to dispel this stereotype it is not Jimmy Smits. Maybe they should have hired Amaury Nolasco. Isn’t he he Puerto Rican though? Well, I guess the stereotype will remain then.

Cuban-Americans have a special interest in new CBS series ‘Cane’ [Boston Globe]

Yes, he he is. As is Jimmy Smits. Can’t have anything about Latinos without at least one Puertorican actor playing the role of another ethnicity. Must be a SAG bylaw. :-)

Fuck man, Jimmy Smits has been to space, man… SPACE! If he can protect Queen Amedala, he can protect a field full of sugar cane.

I’m sure you would all be bitching if they got someone NOT from some kind of brown background playing the Smits character. Smits can act, has a fine ass and saved Amidala. done.

if you want to get technical, hire P*r*z Hilton. Homegirl’s cuban and doing wonders for helping the cubans get out of that right wing crazy stereotype.
