“Cane”! Some People Besides Us Watched It.
26 September 2007, 9:45 AM. By Cindy Casares
Last night we accidentally on purpose did not watch the most important Latino television show in the history of Latino television shows, CBS’s “Cane.” We did however receive this text around midnight from a friend:
Cane is so awful that i’m totally addicted. What u say?
To which we replied that we didn’t watch it and was it terrible? They said:
Super bad.
So, until we have a chance to watch it on DVR and give it a proper review, we’ll have to rely on the words of others. Like this quote from the Boston Globe:
“Cane” is humorless - “Falcon Crest” sans shoulder pads.
And from someone named Eric on a site called The Couch Potato:
As far as acting, Cane is pretty good overall. Jimmy Smits does a good job. The problem is that the only other person ont he [sic] cast that I have ever heard of is Nestor Carbonell (only because he is on Lost and that is my favorite show). Besides Smits and Carbonell the rest of the cast is average overall. [Ed. Note: Sorry, Rita Moreno!]
Some people will enjoy Cane while others will not. If you like Sopranos type shows without all the violence of the Sopranos you should like Cane. Otherwise you shouldn’t watch Cane because there are a ton more shows that are more engaging than Cane.
Why couldn’t Joel Siegel be that honest? Anyone out there actually see the show? Let us know what you thought. We are starting to fall in love with Jimmy Smits, by the way, through sheer brain washing power. Such is the omnipresence of those damn bus ads.
As diversions go, CBS’s ‘Cane’ proves sweet enough [Boston Globe]

Characters were good, and the story plot is promising, and the execution not so much. Also, did you see the trailer for the upcoming episodes? It was about 10 mins. long.
all i gotta say is even if it sucks i will watch it and hope other latin-oh’s (and non-latin-oh’s) watch it too. english tv doesnt doesnt quite properly represent our demographics in terms of numbers so we gotta start somewhere right? so that means i gotta get off my snooty high horse and support low brow entertainment just because its about latino’s, even if the show sucks. power to the people!
I didn’t think it sucked! But maybe I was just excited by Beny More and lechon on primetime tv.
@mare mare:
I don’t think you should just because it is Latino. I also thought the show would be better, and I will probably watch it again because its fun to see how over the top these characters are. You know that scene when the brother is having sex with the Samuel’s siter and they are playing ‘Frou Frou’? It looked like a commercial for a bad perfume.
Sorry people I forgot to watch this show. I was too busy watching Kat Von D on LA Ink. Only the most important show on television. So stoked!
Why bother quoting such a poor review as that Couch Potato? some nerd who only knows the cast of Lost and thinks the violence is the only thing good about the Sopranos?
Cane: not exciting enough in the first 20 min. to stay up past my workweek bedtime. Its no Destilando Amor.
Show was mediocre…the 10 min season trailer at the end basically showed what will go on the entire season.
i heart jimmy smits and hector elizando so i’ll continue to watch
I think they should bring ‘Mi Vida Loca’ to Thursdays on NBC, instead of ‘ER’. You want to see drama? La Blue Eyes blasting some ruca in Echo Park for stealing her boyfriend…oh wait, it’s gentrified now. Paul is so pissed that Kate is cheating on him so he befriends Miguel, his apartment manager, to get advice on what to do. Can you guys see it?!
You know what would make this show the shizzle if they added latin hearthrob Wilmer Valderrama. Puro Party!!!
I kinda liked it, in that guilty pleasure way. I thought it was the Latin Dallas, but my gringo husband summed it up best. He looked at me and said “this is like a telenovela” when Jimmy Smits processed the news that he was going to be a father for the fourth time by getting it on with his foster sister/wife. Also, it was funny to watch the guy from Suddenly Susan getting in on with the psycho b*tch from HBO’s Rome.
I wanted to like it, but it was boring and silly. Sugar is the new oil and Cuba will be at the center of it! Sorry, but I don’t see Cuba as the next Kuwait. lolol That was ridiculous.
I agree with Carnitas. The ideas aren’t bad, but the execution was missing some sizzle. If you’re going to be a telenovela, BE a telenovela, with so-bad-it’s-good acting and EEE-vil plotting. I think the Latinos want to be taken SERIOUSLY so they don’t have fun, which would make for a better show. Humorless is right, which it doesn’t have to be. C’mon, Miami nightclubs, money, sex, it should be more fun!
I might watch, I might not. I am happy these guys have jobs, but I hope they get a little more ballsy. Victor Sifuentes turned into a real a-hole, I hope the Alex character is the same.
ok, i’ll clarify, i will be watching Cane, unless its a horribly incorrect depiction of the culture (like Medellin in Entourage…total bummer). but if the acting is the only horrible thing, i’ll suck it up and still watch. i’ve sat through decades of cheesy novelas growing up, why quit now? I hope it does well, i get all giddy when i see fellow brownies on tv. AND I LOVE LA INK. It lets me reminisce about my old stomping grounds. I wish Kat Von D and Pixie were my bffs!!!!
P.S. I miss me some goooooood carnitas! mm..
Cane: TV land needs a prim time show that features a story about Latinos with a Latino cast.In year 2010 over 40% of the US population will be of Hispanic org.But please remember this is a TV soap opera. Its not real life ! Enjoy this show and have fun watching it.

A major TV network show about Latinos with actual latinos that’s not a stereotypical comedy or faux soap opera? We’re still waiting for ours after 40 some years.
Sincerely,
Black People
so disappointing. If it were a Latino Dallas (the greatest primetime soap, bar none) Victor Sifuentes would have smirked a la JR when he ordered that dude’s execution.
A lot of mixed reviews here as well as over on http://www.CaneForums.com I will continue to watch. We need something to replace the Sopranos.
I can tell you what’s wrong with this show in two words: Production Value.
That scene where Jimmy Smits is driving his car, at night, over to the villain neighbor’s house? It was like a film noir from 1942, and not in a good way. Hilarious. I mean, why was that scene even necessary?
“Cane did not excite nor interest me in any way possible. Maybe it is because I’m not Cuban, maybe it is because I don’t care about rum production or maybe it is just because I’m not a fan of CBS’s standard drama. But mainly, it was because I was bored out of my mind; I couldn’t wait for the episode to end so I could end my pain.”
