President Bush’s plan to open the American border to Mexican truckers this Labor Day weekend seems to be hated by all the people who do the actual trucking. Reports The Brownsville Herald:

Earlier this week the Teamsters Union announced its intention to ask a federal appeals court to block the Bush administration’s plan to enact a measure of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement regarding cross-border trucking

“When you take away all the costs American companies incur with American employees (Mexican companies) will be able to cut the freight rates and monopolize the industry,” [Rio Grande Valley of Texas trucker David] Brown said.

The plan would also give American trucking lines access to Mexico.

Many Mexican trucking companies have also expressed concern that U.S. companies could flood their market.

Canadian trucks already have unrestricted access to U.S. highways. [Ed. Note: Of course, they do!]

Although the measure didn’t manage to get approval for this weekend, we’d like to congratulate Bush on his impeccable timing. Pissing off the blue collars over Labor Day is just what we need to get the last of the red states off his side. Happy Labor Day, everybody.

I know it is popular to blame every problem the world faces on President Bush. However, based on the title of this article, research and attention to facts seem to be irrelevant. Let’s analyze this quote from the very article above; “Bush administration’s plan to enact a measure of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement regarding cross-border trucking.” In 1994 who was the president? Oh yes, Bill Clinton. The current issue has been in appeals. NAFTA was the baby of the Clinton administration, that is where the responsiblity for the problems and the benefits of NAFTA lie.

I have to say I agree that NAFTA is not President Bush’s fault. I’d like to know what is so bad about giving the US less-restricted access to cheap goods from South America.
