In 1999 archaeologists discovered three frozen bodies fully intact in the summit of Mount Llullaillaco, a volcano between Argentina and Chile. That’s one of them on the left. They are now on display at the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology in Salta, Argentina. (We have no idea where that is, either.) The bodies are among the best preserved mummies to date. Sacrificed for a religious ritual known as capacocha, these three little Incas walked hundreds of miles until they reached the summit where they were given chichi (booze). Once passed out, they were put in underground cubbies until they froze to death. The prerequisites for being sacrificed included being really beautiful, physically fit and healthy. Good thing we weren’t fine-ass Incas back then.
