The new CBS series “Cane” is being touted by the Chicago Sun-Times as the first portrayal of an assimilated Latino family on mainstream TV. Judging by the trailer, (which is all we have to go on until it premiers next week), it looks sorta organized crime-ish to us. The Tribune also references “Ugly Betty” as a signal of the positive Latino portrayals on TV today. So let’s see, if you’re an unattractive, sexually un-threatening woman or a businessman who may or may not be into ordering murders, it’s okay to lead a show and that’s assimilation? We hate to say it, but Eva Longoria’s character on “Desperate Housewives” probably does the best job of just being an American, middle class person who happens to be Latina. Damn her.

Amaury Nolasco positively portrayed a Latino character in Transformers. Then he got shot.
