Our Disparaging Remarks About Latinos: A Prophecy Fulfilled

typist.9.14.07.jpg

Latina.com has stirred some shit up with their readers over some jokes we made recently at the expense of Latina wanabee (heh! wanabee, get it?) Beyonce. Now our inbox is crowded with gems like these:

I read your comment on the Beyonce interview with Latina. I am hurt and ashamed you are latins. That comment was unnecessary! That wasn’t even funny. Bad enough that we have prejudices with Americans and other races, but to have it within our owns - just kills me. Gloria Estefan song Todos son Latinos [that is not the name, but those are the lyrics] sums it up correctly. We should be proud as a race and not put each other down. I thought it was beautiful and classy of Beyonce to recognize our culture. What is wrong with being latin. I am sooooo proud to be Puerto Rican!!! I wouldn’t want to be any other race - outside of being Hispanic. I think Cubans, Dominican’s, Mexican’s, South American’s & Central American’s [so many nationalities in each country] are wonderful, gorgeous people. I would be just as proud if I were one of them.
Stop the negativity and start the positively! No more please. Have a heart and use your brain.
Respectfully,

Can your head pop off from reading too many errors in one letter? Cuz we think ours just did.

As my new-wave mother in the 80’s used to say in a fake valley-gabacha accent: PORH FAHVOHR!!!!

Man…what’s up with all this homegrown sentimentalism and ‘honesty’!?! All very junior year of high school. I think it is the righteously vicious task of all good snark and satire to help people not take mass cult so personally. Poor tools.

It’s all well and pretty for the sake of moving units in new demographics that Beyonce embraces her inner ‘Latina’ or whatever the hell it is, but question possible motives or even poke some good-natured, and hell hath no fury like a legion of pendej@s getting all “Latin Pride” when people start ‘recognizing our culture’.

The New England is getting to me and making me want to say, “pish”. Hearts are overrated when your getting served.

“It’s a shame you can’t find a way to report news about your own Latin community and culture in a compassionate, or at least, decent way.”

The most ridiculous thing I have ever heard from someone who takes her clothes in order for guys to jack… well you know what I am getting at.
