PBS Earns A Few Brownie Points With La Lupe Documentary
18 September 2007, 2:15 PM. By Carlos Posas
Last night PBS aired a great documentary on exiled Cuban entertainer and gay-icon La Lupe who was known for her James Brownesque stage performances full of passion and unpredictability. In the sixties, she was the most popular Latin singer in New York City partly due to her partnering up with Puerto Rican salsa sensation Tito Puente. She was also the first Latin singer to sell out a concert at Madison Square Garden and last night we learned she was a single mother of two, a survivor of domestic abuse and a devout follower of Santeria who later became an evangelist Christian speaker. JLo should study her singing and maybe, just maybe, she’d spit out something worth listening to.

Wow, you guys sure keep late hours. If you’re in NY, the doc aired Monday morning at 3:15 am. But hey, that crazy Dick Cavett show appearance with the gold lame catsuit that’s open in the back to her buttcrack was priceless!!!
uggh!!! uhh? DUDE… that documentary was shown LAST WEEK!!! (i’m on the east coast)… chop chop…. no se duerman!
J.Lo doesn’t have the chops to even close to singing like La Lupe. The better bet is that she’ll make a biopic about it casting Marc Anthony as either Tito Puente or Chucho Avellanet. Or both.
