Can You Spot The Latino Stereotypes In "Cane"?

amd_cane2.jpg

So we finally sat down last night to watch the premiere episode of CBS’s “Cane,” but rather than do a traditional review, let’s play a game. We’ll use “Where’s Waldo” as inspiration, but instead of finding a striped-shirt wearing male anorexic, we’ll look for Latino stereotypes. We already have some that have been pointed out by our friends and neighbors around the net.

• Latinos and manual labor. The Duque’s wealth comes from a sugar cane business because how else was a Latino family going to get rich? Computers? [Chicago Tribune]

• Producers think Cubans and baseball are like black on beans. [CT]

• The Duque’s drink insane amounts of cafesito…and Mexicans eat tacos everyday, Puerto Ricans eat pork everyday, and Argentines can’t live without their milaneza. [WatchFreeEpisodes Blog]

• All Latinos are hot and sexy. Sadly, this is not always true. [Guanabee Comments]

If you thought you caught a stereotype, shoot us a line. We’re kind of stuck with the show for a few more months so we might as well enjoy it.

Is there a Tia? Is she all dramatic and gossips all the time? Bonus points if she has a sexually promiscuous daughter.

Hey at least Jimmy had sort of Cuban accent when he spoke Spanish. He wasn’t like “a donde esta le gua-gua?”

I’m sorry, but the chick who plays Jimmy’s wife is a total poor man’s Eva Longoria. And Eva’s already a poor man’s Eva Longoria.

@gatita 79: That’s because Jimmy is Puerto Rican man. I did notice that the girl that plays Alex’s wife had the children at 17. There’s another one. Oh wait, my mom did have me when she was 17. Well, I guess that one holds.

Hi Carnitas
Yes i know he is Puerto Rican dude. That’s my point, he was able to put on some Cuban when he spoke. Not like Benicio Del Toro who sounds like a total Colombian in the movie Traffic. He play’s a Mexican in the movie!
Jajaja.

My office is on a strict 10 am and 4pm cafesito schedule…and that doesn’t count what goes down at lunch. Is it still a stereotype if it’s true?

@fulanita
I think the embellishing of truth is what upholds most stereotypes. The saying goes that stereotypes are inspired by truth, so…um…to answer your question: si ;)

@cuerpo

I totally agree…my point was just that it wasn’t embellished!

benicio sounded like a total pocho in Traffic!!!!!! NOT colombian! grr.
